The Design Process

Our Campervan Conversion Process

Creating a bespoke campervan should be an enjoyable and reassuring experience.

At Winby Land Yachts, we work closely with you from the first conversation through to the final handover. We take time to understand how you plan to travel, what you need from the space and which features are most important to you.

Our experience in fine cabinetmaking, practical design and handcrafted interiors allows us to create a campervan that looks refined, works beautifully and feels entirely your own.

Why Choose Winby Land Yachts?

Every conversion is individually designed and handcrafted in our workshop.

We do not rely on generic, mass-produced furniture packages. Instead, we build each interior around the available space, your chosen layout and the way you intend to use the van.

Our background in fine cabinetmaking brings precision, thoughtful storage and careful attention to detail to every stage of the build.

Step 1: Your Free Initial Consultation

The process begins with a relaxed, no-obligation consultation.

We will discuss:

  • How you plan to use your campervan
  • The number of people travelling
  • Your preferred layout
  • The equipment you want to carry
  • Your budget
  • Your preferred base vehicle
  • Any specialist storage or accessibility requirements

This conversation helps us understand your priorities and provide an initial indication of the likely conversion cost.

Step 2: Choose Your Campervan Layout

You can begin with one of our two signature layouts or discuss a more individual design.

Our Fixed Bed layout provides a permanent sleeping area with generous storage beneath the bed.

Our Sofa Bed, layout creates a spacious daytime lounge that converts into a comfortable double bed at night.

Both can be personalised with your choice of finishes, upholstery, equipment and optional features.

Step 3: Choosing the Right Van

You provide the base vehicle and we complete the conversion.

If you already own a suitable van, we can discuss whether it will work with your preferred layout and specification.

If you are still looking, we can offer guidance on suitable makes, models, lengths and roof heights.

Medium-wheelbase panel vans are a popular choice because they offer a good balance between interior space and manageable driving. Vehicle condition, service history, mileage and previous use should all be considered carefully before purchasing.

Choosing the right van at the beginning can make a significant difference to the finished layout, available storage and overall cost.

Step 4: Visit Our Workshop

Step 4: Visit Our Workshop

Once you have chosen your van, we will arrange a workshop visit.

This gives us the opportunity to inspect and measure the vehicle, confirm the layout and discuss the finer details of your conversion.

During the visit, we can consider:

  • Upholstery colours
  • Flooring and worktops
  • Cabinetry details
  • Electrical equipment
  • Heating and hot water
  • Kitchen appliances
  • Storage requirements
  • Optional extras

Once the specification is agreed, we will confirm the price and reserve a place in our workshop schedule.

A non-refundable deposit of £5,000 is currently required to secure the project.

Step 5: Finalise Your Specification

Following your workshop consultation, we will prepare the final specification and cost for your conversion.

Approximately three weeks before work begins, a payment of 50% of the total conversion cost is required, less the initial deposit.

The remaining balance is payable before collection.

A typical campervan conversion takes approximately 12 to 20 weeks, depending on the complexity of the design and our workshop schedule.

Step 6: Follow the Build

We will keep you informed as your campervan takes shape.

Throughout the build, we provide photographs so you can see the interior being handcrafted, fitted and finished.

Every cabinet and panel is individually made rather than purchased as part of a prefabricated furniture package. English ash is used throughout our signature interiors because of its strength, natural appearance and timeless character.

Step 7: Certification and Handover

Once your campervan is complete, we carry out the final checks and prepare it for collection.

Your conversion will receive the relevant gas certification and electrical sign-off.

During the handover, we will explain how to use the main systems and equipment, including:

  • Heating
  • Water system
  • Electrical controls
  • Battery charging
  • Kitchen appliances
  • Lighting
  • Safety equipment

This gives you the confidence to begin travelling and enjoy your new campervan from the first journey.

Step 8: Warranty and Aftercare

Our service continues after you collect your campervan.

Every conversion includes a one-year return-to-base warranty covering materials, parts and construction.

Should an issue arise, contact us and we will arrange for it to be assessed and resolved as quickly as possible.

We also enjoy hearing where our customers travel and seeing how their Winby Land Yacht becomes part of their adventures.
